Our Philosophy
 
Is to empower survivors and their children with the ability to make significant choices and to solve problems related to their lives. In doing so, it will increase the family's ability to make the transition from an abusive environment to one of safer self-sufficiency. Together, we can begin to end the generational cycle of domestic violence.
The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, 
known suffering, known struggle, known loss,
And have found their way out of the depths.
These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life 
that fills them with compassion's, gentleness, and a deep loving concern.

In 2003 about 12.4 children per 1,000 nationally were victims of abuse. Of these children, 60% experienced neglect, 19% were physically abused, 17% were associated with other types of abuse, 10% were sexually abused, and 5% were emotionally abused. Children under 3 had the highest rate at 16.4 per 1000. About 1,500 children died as the result of abuse or neglect in 2003 and were younger than 4 years at the time they were killed (Tolan, Gorman-Smith & Henry, 2005).

If you think about these statistics in terms of those under the age of 18 there is a possibility of 84 children in Steuben County alone, (U.S. Census Bureau, 2008 Estimates) annually being subjected to abuse in some manner. Without intervention, of those who survive, at least half will grow up to be abusers or victims and continue the cycle of violence in our community or others they may move to.Victoria Clarke-Personette Founder TLC-Steuben Inc.
